Youth With a Mission

Leah has been serving here since September 2005. After my graduation from Simpson with a degree in Cross-Cultural Studies, I decided to move to Romania for a year to work with the street children and YWAM again. One year pasted quickly and I have been here ever since!

I am working with children from poor Turkish Gypsy families through weekly children’s evangelism programs and supporting children to go to school by helping with homework and providing material needs. Loving on kids in need is my passion and joy! We long to see each child loving Jesus and reaching their full potential in life. And not only that, but through the children we are able to reach the hearts of the parents as well, impacting whole families!

When I think of why I am in Romania serving in this way, I am reminded of a verse in 2 Corinthians 5:14 that I thought about a lot before moving to Romania: “For Christ’s love compels us… that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them and was raised again.” Why am I here in Romania? God’s love compels me :-).

Over the years I have been ministering in different ways to street people, Christian young people, university students and children from poor families. However, in the last few years I have narrowed my focus to working mainly with children and youth from poor families.

Since 2009 we have been running weekly evangelism programs, reaching out to Turkish Gypsy children from a poor neighborhood in our city. The children range in age from 3 years old to 20 years old and often we have parents attending our programs as well.

In September 2012 we helped four boys attending our program to start the first grade, some of them being the first in their families to ever go to school. Since then we have been supporting them with material resources and weekly homework help, working with the teachers and parents to make sure they do well in school.

Our desire is to see the children and families in this neighborhood transformed by the presence of God in their lives. Although the families are coming from a Muslim background they are very open to hearing about Jesus. We will soon start a Bible study for parents who are interested knowing Jesus more and we pray that many will decide to begin a relationship with Him.

We also plan to start a preschool group for the youngest children in the neighborhood and their mothers, to disciple the little ones and prepare them for school, while also helping the mothers to be the best they can for their children. We are very excited to see how God is opening doors for us in this neighborhood and in the lives of the families we serve!

Besides working in this neighborhood, we have recently started visiting children in a new housing project for poor families. We are praying for God’s leading on how to reach out to the families there.

I also serve at our YWAM ministry center on the worship team and with our communication department. And once a week I teach at a local Christian preschool, sharing with the children about different cultures and countries of the world. This is another great way to use who we are as YWAM (an international organization) to bless the community.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends, helping new missionaries learn Romanian, and dreaming of the great things God will do in our city in the future.

Thank you for supporting me and being a part of this great adventure God has allowed me to live here in Romania! God bless you!
